Devil’s Cauldron, Lydford Gorge

Image

So, after a big walk today we took to the Gorge at Lydford. Starting from the lower car park we reached the devil’s cauldron about half way through our walk. Yet again, I had not brought the tripod but thankfully the handrail provided suitable support.

How would you sum it up?

So today I was listening to Radio 4 Desert Island Discs (quality program) with Dustin Hoffman and he was recalling a conversation with his father.  He has asked his father (aged ~80) how would he sum it up and his father responded

“ITS ALL BULLSHIT!”

Kirsty asked Dustin what he would say to his children if asked the same question and he responds:

“Follow your passion, don’t get trapped in the culture.  Making it in my day was about making a living,  now it jumps straight to being a celebrity. … Please keep reminding yourself that nothing is permanent.”

Wise words indeed.

Dealing with Injury

Scan 8

Like many people my age who are involved in sports I have had my fair share of injuries, three significant ones to be precise.   I’m also one of the what I would consider unfortunate ones whose soft tissue is weaker than ones bones and my accidents have meant that I didn’t arrive in the back of an ambulance.   In the past I didn’t like to admit weakness and accept I may need medical treatment but now I’m first in the queue – this is why.

Matt Mullenweg on Bloomberg TV

This is an old video from Bloomberg Venture but it just reminds me of how cool wordpress is. I use to be a Joomla advocate but in the last couple of years I have completely converted to WordPress because it has a sustainable business model and seems to provide better results.

Windows or Mac?

funny-facebook-fails-failbook-mac-vs-pc

This is in many ways a reply to Failbook: Mac vs PC.

So just before Christmas I went out and treated myself to a new iMac and coincidentally around the same time a friend took their first steps into the world of Mac and bought themselves a Macbook Air.  Now, whilst I am lounging in a blaze of bliss and joy they are feeling a thundering hatred towards Macs.   I feel some sympathy towards my friend  – my first iMac purchase five years ago left me frustrated and eventually I pushed it across desks towards my Mac loving wife.  However five years on and with the benefits of Macbook ownership I am no longer a frustrated Mac immigrant and feel a need to defend Macs against what appears to me as ill-informed hatred.

British Informatics Olympiad 2012 Poster

Every year the British Informatics Olympiad run a competition in partnership with Lionhead Studios. The aim – to encourage young people interested in a career in computer games programming.

Each year they produce a poster which is sent out to schools to advertise the competition. The poster arrives with a puzzle that I always dream of finding the time to solve.
